Anaheim Police Department received a call reporting a suspicious male in the 1100 block of North Columbine Street in Anaheim, California. The caller stated the individual was unknown to the area and was standing outside a neighbor’s driveway holding a brick. The male was described as possibly transient and under the influence of drugs. Approximately 30 minutes later, an officer self-dispatched to the call. Around the same time, police received a second report from an employee at John Marshall Elementary School stating the same male was now carrying a broken shovel. The caller reported the individual had been in the area for about an hour, had been near the school parking lot, and had moved into the middle of the street. When the officer arrived, he observed the male walking in the roadway while holding the shovel. As the officer stopped his patrol vehicle, the suspect raised the shovel above his head and charged toward the officer and patrol car, striking the vehicle multiple times. The suspect then turned toward the officer and advanced with the shovel raised. An officer-involved shooting occurred. Officers immediately rendered medical aid, including chest compressions and the application of chest seals. Anaheim Fire and Rescue paramedics responded to the scene and transported the suspect to a local hospital, where he later died.
