Bodycam: a man offered an officer $4,000 cash to walk away — then slipped his handcuffs inside the back of a squad car. Officers in Winthrop Harbor, Illinois stopped a driver they had under surveillance and moved to take him into custody. According to prosecutors, he told an officer he had $4,000 in his pocket and the officer could have it if he let him go. A search turned up the cash. He was handcuffed and placed in a squad car. While officers searched his vehicle, he worked his way out of the cuffs by slipping a leg under his arms. Both of his shoes came off. When officers intervened, one of them caught a finger in the handcuffs and suffered a laceration. A second officer was hurt during the takedown. Prosecutors said he was on pre-trial release in four separate Lake County cases at the time. Under Illinois law, bribery is complete at the moment of the offer. No money has to change hands, and no officer has to accept it. CHARGES AS REPORTED: bribery, aggravated battery to a peace officer, and resisting a peace officer causing injury.
