On November 15, 2019, a 22-year-old contract dog walker hired through the Wag app was arrested on larceny charges after Queens resident Shayna Bryan caught her stealing a coat and a designer handbag — totaling over $800 in value — from her apartment in real time through a live home security camera feed. Bryan, who was dining at a restaurant when the theft occurred, watched the walker move through her home and remove the items before activating her smart-home speaker to directly confront the walker and order her to return the belongings. When Wag's response was slow, Bryan uploaded the timestamped security footage to Twitter, where the clip accumulated hundreds of thousands of views within hours and generated enough public pressure to force both a formal police response and immediate action from the company. The footage — which captured the walker on camera taking the items, included the audio of Bryan's voice coming through the smart speaker, and was preserved in the viral Twitter post — served as the primary evidence leading to the arrest. Wag subsequently deactivated the walker's account and issued a refund to Bryan. The case drew widespread attention to the vulnerability of clients who grant app-based service workers unsupervised access to their homes, and raised urgent questions about background check standards and accountability protocols at gig-economy platforms operating in densely populated urban markets. ––– Disclaimer: This video is a dramatization based on real events.
