On May 1, 2024, Key West officers responded to a driving under the influence investigation at the request of a sergeant. Upon arrival, they met with the sergeant, who had initiated a traffic stop involving a white vehicle. The vehicle had run a stop sign and made a wide right turn, nearly colliding with another vehicle. Despite the activation of emergency lights and sirens, the vehicle did not stop until a later block. The officers approached the female driver, who displayed signs of impairment such as slurred speech and glossy eyes. The officers suspected the driver, referred to as Amanda, was under the influence of alcohol or another substance. Amanda was asked to participate in field sobriety tests, which she agreed to. Following the tests, Amanda was placed under arrest and transferred to the county detention center. During the transfer, Amanda managed to slip out of her handcuffs briefly. After a 20-minute observation period, Amanda agreed to provide a breath sample, which indicated a blood alcohol content of 0.309%.
