A minor U-Haul accident outside a Fairburn hotel quickly escalated into a parking-lot fight—and ended with an unexpected DUI arrest. On April 28, 2023, Fairburn Police responded to the Best Western on Oakley Industrial Boulevard after a U-Haul box truck clipped a vehicle while turning into the hotel parking lot. The U-Haul driver admitted causing the accident and claimed she immediately stopped to apologize. But according to police reports and an independent witness, the other driver allegedly became aggressive and threw the first punch. When Officer Stephen Lanford arrived, both women gave completely different accounts of the confrontation. One woman claimed she had been struck by the U-Haul and then attacked by its driver. The U-Haul driver admitted fighting back but insisted she acted in self-defense. As officers investigated who started the fight, the encounter took another unexpected turn when Officer Lanford detected the smell of alcohol. What began as a minor traffic accident was now a parking-lot fight, a witness investigation, and a series of field sobriety tests. Marguerite Spears was ultimately arrested and charged with DUI—alcohol less safe—and no proof of insurance.
