Body camera video and 911 call audio from the City of Fort Collins Police Department regarding the fatal officer involved shooting of George Randall Newman. (All redactions were made by the City of Fort Collins Police Department.) [10:20] Officer involved shooting occurs soon Location: Fort Collins, Larimer County, Colorado, United States Date: October 1, 2017 (Sunday) Fort Collins District Attorney: ... On October 1, 2017 at approximately 4:50 a.m., Fort Collins Police Services received a 911 call from a male who was staying the night at the America’s Best Value Inn, located at 1809 North College Avenue in Fort Collins, Colorado. The male reported that he was staying in room #107 and that he had heard a loud noise and a hole appeared in the ceiling of his room and debris rained down from the hole. The male reported that he believed that a gunshot had been fired through the floor of the room above him. The male caller sheltered in place while awaiting the arrival of the police. Sergeant Justin Gallimore, Officer D. Knab, and Officer A. Brunjes responded to the America’s Best Value Inn. The officers staged on the north side of the motel due to the fact that room #107 was on the south side of the building. Sergeant Gallimore retrieved his patrol rifle from his car as did Officer Knab. Officer Brunjes intentionally did not take his patrol rifle so that his hands would be free to take control of the suspect who had fired the surmised gunshot which came through the ceiling of room #107. All three officers were wearing Fort Collins Police uniforms clearly identifying themselves as Fort Collins Police Officers. The three officers made their way to the south side of the building and approached room #107, which was on the ground floor and whose door faced the south parking lot. The officers made contact with the occupant of room #107, who had placed the call to 911, and were able to protect him as he exited the room and retrieved his car. While in room #107, the officers observed what appeared to be a gunshot hole in the ceiling of room #107. The officers determined that room #215 was the room directly above room #107. Officer Knab contacted the motel manager and learned that a person by the name of D. Newman had checked into room #215 on September 29, 2017. The police attempted to contact the occupant of room #215 via the phone, but the phone was unanswered. As the officers were assessing how to make contact with an apparently armed individual in room #215, they observed a vehicle, driven by a female, pull into the south parking lot, which would be in the direct line of fire from room #215. Officers immediately made contact with the female driver to direct her to a place of safety. The female driver told the officers that she needed to pick up her three-year-old daughter who was in room #215. Upon hearing that the female’s three-year-old daughter was in the room, where an apparent gunshot had just been fired, the officers asked the female who was in the room with the three-year-old. The female told the officers that her daughter was with “George.” The female claimed that George was a friend, yet the female said she did not know “George’s” last name. The female told the officers that she had recently been in room #215, with her three-year-old daughter, but ran out briefly to pick up a computer at her residence which was very near the motel. When asked if there were any firearms in the room with “George,” the female indicated that she did not know. Subsequent investigation revealed that this female was in fact in room #215 when George Randall Newman discharged a firearm into the floor which created the bullet hole in the ceiling of room #107. After the firearm was fired, the female left room #215, with her infant son, but left her three-year-old daughter in the room with George Randall Newman who was armed with a firearm. Upon learning that a three-year-old child was in room #215. Sergeant Gallimore determined that an imminent threat to the life and safety of the child existed and that he and Officers Knab and Brunjes needed to make immediate contact with “George” in room #215 even though this immediate action would significantly increase the risk to the officer’s safety. The officers directed the female to the safety of a parking lot at an adjoining business as they prepared their plan on how best to approach the armed subject in room #215 and safely retrieve the three-year-old girl. Due to the architecture of the motel and the exigency of the threat to the three-year-old child, the only option for the officers was to climb an exterior staircase to an exterior balcony which provides the only entrance to each of the second-story rooms. ...
