On April 17, 2023, a deputy stopped a cargo van on Interstate 85 south of Atlanta, Georgia for a test-drive tag and no seatbelt. The driver told him she was traveling, not driving, said she had a license but did not have to show it, and refused to step out. When the deputy got her door open she put the van in drive and accelerated away — and her small brown Yorkie fell out onto the interstate. What began as a routine traffic stop became a 92 mph pursuit down I-85, a PIT maneuver on the exit ramp, and a standoff with the van wedged in the treeline, where she still would not come out. A K-9 was deployed, she was pulled from the back of the van, treated at the scene and transported to a hospital, then booked into the county jail on nine charges. A records check on the name she gave came back showing a valid driver's license. An officer went back for the Yorkie and found her on the side of the highway. She was turned over to animal services and reported to be doing fine. Charges: obstruction of officers, fleeing and attempting to elude a police officer, speeding, failure to maintain lane, driving in the emergency lane, operating a vehicle without a valid tag, no proof of insurance, a seatbelt violation, and license to be carried and exhibited on demand.
