On May 20, 2025, Law enforcement in Del Norte County received a report of a female pedestrian in the roadway on Northcrest Drive near East Madison Avenue. California Highway Patrol officers arrived first and recognized the woman as Austy Paris McCann, someone they had encountered in previous calls over the past weeks where she was taken to the local hospital for mental health related issues. McCann was transported to jail after her mother refused to take her. McCann had also declined offers for mental health assistance on several prior occasions and has been told multiple times to stay out of roadways.
