On June 8, 2024, at approximately 3:21 AM, officers responded to a disturbance on the ocean block of Sumner Avenue in Seaside Heights. The scene involved multiple individuals and escalated into a situation requiring law enforcement intervention. Responding officers, including Lt. Violante, Officer Schiano Jr., Officer Hendrickson, and Officer Difabio, arrived at the location where two individuals, later identified as a male and a female, were placed under arrest. During the course of these arrests, Sgt. Hershey, who was also on the scene, worked to keep the crowd at a safe distance to avoid interference. Most of the bystanders complied with orders to stay back, except for one of the individual. Despite multiple warnings from Sgt. Hershey to stay back or face arrest, the subject continued to ignore the commands and attempted to walk past the officers to approach the arrested individuals. After several failed attempts to stop him, this subject was arrested for obstruction and interference with law enforcement. He was handcuffed without incident and transported to the Seaside Heights Police Department for booking and processing. He was later released on a summons with a future court date. He was eventually fined $533 for his role in the fracas. Meanwhile, a second individual, a male, also tried to interfere with the arrests. He identified himself as the son of a police chief. However, it does not appear as though he is the son of the Seaside Heights Police Department’s chief of police. His charges were later amended to a violation under a public nuisance ordinance, and he was fined $783. The female involved in the disturbance claimed to be the granddaughter of a medical examiner, but this assertion could not be verified. The charges against her remain pending in court.
