The Las Cruces Police Department has released body camera footage showing a fatal officer-involved shooting outside a Chili’s restaurant on Telshor Boulevard. The incident occurred on October 9, around 6 p.m., when multiple 911 callers reported a man armed with a hammer and a knife, threatening customers at the restaurant. Responding officers quickly arrived at the scene. One officer located the suspect sitting inside a parked vehicle, with the engine running and music playing. When asked to exit the car, the suspect — later identified as a man with a documented history of mental illness — retrieved a clawed hammer and advanced toward the officer. The officer drew his firearm and repeatedly commanded the suspect to stop and raise his hands. Despite multiple warnings, the man continued to move forward, closing a distance of roughly 60 feet. The officer fired three shots, striking the suspect in the chest. After the man collapsed, the officer immediately called for help and began lifesaving measures until additional officers arrived. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported. During a press conference, Police Chief Jeremy Story confirmed the man had prior non-criminal encounters with police and was known to suffer from mental illness. Earlier that day, he reportedly visited a local gun store asking for the cheapest firearm but made no purchase. Investigators later recovered both a knife and the hammer used in the incident. Chief Story explained that the officer acted alone and stated: “As a general rule, an officer is not going to use a less-lethal tool for a lethal encounter when they are by themselves. If there had been multiple officers, there might have been multiple options — but there were not.” 0:00 - Intro 0:20 - 911 call 2:43 - Bodycamera footage 3:08 - Shooting 4:18 - Aftermath Disclaimer: The following content contains graphic scenes of violence that may be disturbing to some viewers.
