At 4:30 AM on February 22, 2026, Jefferson Police Department officers responded to a domestic civil call at a home on Academy Woods Drive in Jackson County, Georgia. The homeowner, Thomas Mooney, was inside with his children. His estranged wife had arrived with a coworker to retrieve a van. What happened next would lead to the termination of Sgt. Jose Marrero, a 9-year veteran of the Jefferson Police Department, and criminal charges filed by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. On bodycam, Sgt. Marrero is heard telling the wife she can break into the house and "will not get in trouble for it." When she said she couldn't, he suggested she have one of the men with her do it instead. The homeowner -- repeatedly asking "Do you have a warrant?" -- was met with the officer's threat: "You give me the keys or this door is coming down. Everybody that gets in my way is getting tased and going to jail." The homeowner later described the encounter as "like an armed robbery." On March 6, 2026, Sgt. Marrero was arrested by the GBI and terminated from the Jefferson Police Department the same day.
