On April 19, 2026, officers with the Ellensburg Police Department responded to a neighborhood north of the Central Washington University campus after an officer spotted a man walking down the sidewalk with an open container of alcohol near a large house party. When the officer initiated contact, the suspect dropped the can of Mike’s Hard Strawberry Lemonade and showed clear signs of intoxication. While being detained to await a written citation, the man suddenly fled from law enforcement on foot. According to the probable cause affidavit, the fleeing suspect—identified as 20-year-old CWU undergraduate student Maxx Phrenick Estrada of Woodinville—ran to a nearby parked vehicle, jumped inside, and locked the doors. As a police officer began breaking out the driver's side window to prevent him from leaving, Estrada started the engine and sped away through crowded, residential neighborhood streets. The pursuit quickly escalated when the Washington State Patrol spotted Estrada's vehicle traveling at high speeds down Interstate 90. After a brief pursuit, Estrada drove the vehicle off the freeway, crashed onto the front lawn of a nearby residence, disabled the car, and fled on foot into nearby bushes where tracking officers finally located him. Following his arrest, authorities reported that Estrada’s behavior escalated significantly while being transported and during intake processing at the Kittitas County Jail. Officers noted that Estrada made explicit verbal threats to shoot an officer in the face with an AR-15 rifle and threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend's father. Inside the booking facility, he continued to act aggressively, punching himself and slamming into cell doors and counters. Estrada was officially booked for felony harassment, attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle, minor in possession/consumption of alcohol, and driving under the influence (DUI). Watch the body cam footage as Ellensburg officers attempt a routine citation, track an escaping vehicle onto the interstate, and manage an increasingly volatile suspect following a dangerous high-speed pursuit.
