A routine welfare check takes an unexpected turn when an officer observes suspicious residue on a driver's nose, escalating a seemingly minor encounter. On a clear morning, Deputy Brown responded to reports of a suspicious person, leading him to Marcel Shazier. After offering Marcel a ride, they arrived at a residence where 39-year-old Jessie Stevens exited a vehicle, holding a bowl of cereal. Despite her denial of impairment, the deputy observed white powder residue in her nostrils and noted her unsteady gait, prompting him to initiate standardized field sobriety exercises. Ms. Stevens struggled significantly with the Modified Romberg Balance, Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, Walk and Turn, and One Leg Stand tests, displaying clear indicators of impairment. Based on her attempt to operate a motor vehicle and her inability to perform the exercises, she was placed under arrest for Physical Control of a Motor Vehicle.
