Police chase bodycam and helicopter footage from San Diego: a woman in a stolen Lexus leads SDPD on an hour-long pursuit from Tecolote Road up Interstate 5 at more than 90 mph, and when officers lay spike strips across Derby Farms Road she swerves onto the grass straight at two officers on foot. This real police chase bodycam release from the San Diego Police Department shows the full police pursuit from the helicopter, the sergeant's body camera at the spike strip, and the second spike strip that finally stops the car. WHAT HAPPENED May 6, 2026, 11:03 AM. San Diego police locate an occupied stolen Lexus in the 4800 block of Tecolote Road. The SDPD helicopter, ABLE, guides officers in. As they arrive, the driver, 35-year-old Janet Hammel, takes off. She fails to yield and runs northbound on Interstate 5 at speeds over 90 mph in moderate traffic, exits toward Del Mar, then continues east on Via de la Valle and San Dieguito Road at up to 80 mph. Because of her unsafe and erratic driving, the ground pursuit is terminated and the helicopter keeps watch as she drives into a gated community in the Derby Farms Road area. Sergeant Jeffrey Houchins, a 16-year veteran assigned to Western Division patrol, and another officer deploy spike strips on Derby Farms Road and stand on a grassy embankment, expecting her to come back. She does - and drives up onto the grass between the two officers to avoid the spikes. Sergeant Houchins fires one round from his service weapon. It strikes the hood of the Lexus. No one is hit. Hammel keeps going east toward Poway. On Ted Williams Parkway the stolen vehicle is disabled by a second set of spike strips and she is taken into custody without further incident. OUTCOME Janet Debbie Hammel, 35, of San Diego, was arrested without injury and booked into the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility. She was charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, felony reckless evading, possession of a stolen vehicle, grand theft and a parole violation. No officers were injured. The San Diego County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit is investigating the shooting under the countywide reciprocal agreement; the District Attorney, the FBI and the U.S. Attorney's Office are reviewing it, and SDPD Internal Affairs and the Commission on Police Practices are conducting separate reviews.
