On September 21, 2023, airport police at Nashville International Airport responded to a fight at a concourse restaurant. Witnesses described a woman knocking merchandise off shelves at multiple businesses, then striking an 81-year-old woman in the face with a cell phone held in a closed fist — leaving a quarter-inch laceration above her eye — and spitting in a second woman's face. Officers reviewed surveillance footage on scene, searched the terminal for about ten minutes, and found her sitting near a gate. Then they did something most people don't expect: they asked both victims whether they wanted to press charges. Both declined. So she was taken into custody on a single count of disorderly conduct. Over the next ten minutes, on body camera, she added four more: resisting an officer, a second disorderly count, assault on a first responder after spitting during transport, and she slipped her handcuffs in the patrol car. 26-year-old Autumn Cathey was ultimately charged with elder abuse, assault on a first responder, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and vandalism, with bond set at $12,000. They gave her a way out.
