On June 19, 2023, Sgt. Knowles arrested Joshua Alexander for Drug and Traffic offenses. Sgt. Knowles was on patrol on Eley Rd when he observed the vehicle in front of him traveling at a high rate of speed and failing to maintain its lane. Sgt. Knowles was able to catch up with the vehicle and see it was a silver, Nissan Maxima, with a Georgia drive out tag. Sgt. Knowles initiated a traffic stop on said vehicle by activating his emergency equipment. The vehicle then accelerated and turned right onto Crawfordville Rd. Sgt. Knowles had his emergency lights and siren activated and pursued the vehicle in a marked patrol car. Said vehicle continued to fail to maintain its lane by crossing over the yellow line and driving in both lanes as it negotiated the curves. The vehicle then turned left onto East Main St without stopping at the stop sign. The vehicle reach speeds over 80 mph in a 45 mph zone and again used both lanes of travel to negotiate the curves. The vehicle then came to a slow roll in front of the County Line Trailer Park and traveled in the opposing lane. Sgt. Knowles observed the driver door open and the driver exited the vehicle. The driver was a thin black male who threw an item as he ran towards Sgt. Knowles. Sgt. Knowles exited his patrol car and drew his issued taser. As the subject ran past Sgt. Knowles, Sgt. Knowles deployed the taser, striking the subject in the back and the male fell to the ground. Sgt. Knowles ordered him to place his hands behind his back and he complied. The male said he was scared because he did not have a license. As Sgt. Knowles was securing the male, a female ran into the road, from a mobile home and said the vehicle was still rolling. She ran after the vehicle and was able to get it stopped as it came to a rest on the South side of the roadway in tall grass. No damage was observed to the vehicle. The female, later identified as, M. Shelton, said the vehicle was hers, and she was the girlfriend of the driver. Sgt. Knowles asked the driver for his name and he said it was Joshua Alexander with a date of birth, 1985. Sgt. Knowles conducted a pat down of his person, finding nothing on him. Sgt. Knowles assisted him to his feet and escorted him to the patrol car. Sgt. Knowles then removed both taser probes and placed Joshua in the rear of the patrol car. Sgt. Knowles could smell the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Joshua's person and observed him to have, bloodshot and water eyes. Sgt. Knowles checked the shoulder of the road where the vehicle came to a stop and observed it did not strike anything. Sgt. Knowles then checked the North shoulder of the roadway for the item/s thrown by Joshua as he exited the vehicle. Sgt. Knowles located a green, Crown Royal bag next to a cell phone. The bag contained suspected narcotics. Sgt. Knowles placed the items in his patrol car and Joshua said the bag did not belong to him but the cell phone did. Sgt. Knowles released the vehicle to Meridith Shelton due to it being in front of the residence. Sgt. Knowles then read Joshua his Miranda Rights, and he said he understood them, and he would talk with Sgt. Knowles. Sgt. Knowles asked him how much he had to drink, and he said three beers, Sgt. Knowles then read the Georgia Implied Consent Notice for Subjects over 21 (green card) and asked for blood. Joshua said no. Sgt. Knowles then transported Joshua to the Greene County LEC without incident. Joshua Alexander was cited for DUI refusal, Driving while license Suspended and Failure to Maintain Lane.
