While checking the area, officers quickly located a dog matching the description—an off-leash Husky/Shepherd-type mix—along with the suspected owner, 29-year-old Trusten Eaton. Officers informed Eaton that he was being detained while they investigated the incident. Eaton refused to comply with verbal commands and attempted to pull away from an officer who tried to detain him. As the interaction continued, the off-leash dog repeatedly charged toward the officers, barking aggressively and baring its teeth. Officers were forced to retreat multiple times as the dog continued to present an immediate safety risk. Additional units were requested as Eaton continued to ignore commands and failed to control the dog. Officers warned Eaton that if he did not comply, the dog could be shot due to the ongoing threat. Moments later, the dog charged directly at one of the officers. As the officer backpedaled to avoid the attack, he fired a single round, striking the dog in the front leg. Immediately after, Eaton turned toward the officer holding a green bottle, charged forward, and threw the object. The officer fired again, striking Eaton in the leg. Eaton briefly made contact with the officer before fleeing on foot, with the injured dog following behind. Responding officers quickly arrived on scene and were able to take Eaton into custody. During the arrest, the dog allegedly bit another officer. Eaton was transported to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The dog was also taken to a veterinary clinic and is expected to recover. Eaton was arrested on suspicion of resisting a peace officer and using force or threats to obstruct law enforcement, along with additional violations related to the dog being unleashed and out of control.
