On January 29th, 2025, 22-year-old student teacher Kristen Volpe was pulled out of John L. Hensey Elementary School in Washington, Illinois after law enforcement received a tip about a concerning Snapchat message she had sent earlier that day. What makes this case unlike most is the tip didn't come from a student, a parent, or a coworker. It came from Snapchat's own AI, which automatically detected the message, flagged it, and reported it directly to the FBI. Within one hour of the message being sent, deputies from the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office were already on scene. Volpe had sent a private snap to just three people, her boyfriend and two roommates, venting about a student who had walked up and closed her laptop mid-lesson plan. During the bodycam footage, Volpe is cooperative and visibly shocked throughout the entire encounter, repeatedly telling deputies the message was a joke and that she is not a violent person. Law enforcement later stated they believed her, noting the comment appeared to be made out of pure exasperation with no intent to harm anyone and that she was not considered a threat to the school. Despite that, Volpe was taken into custody, processed, and booked into the Tazewell County Jail on a charge of disorderly conduct. Under Illinois' SAFE-T Act, which abolished cash bail, no traditional bond was set. She spent the night in a holding cell while the state's attorney reviewed the case the following morning. No formal charges were ever filed, and court records for Tazewell County show no indication that the case moved forward. However, the legal outcome wasn't the end of it. The school district sent a letter home to parents informing them of the situation. Superintendent Chad Allaman confirmed that Volpe would not be returning to the school to complete her student teaching assignment, a consequence that likely affected her path toward earning her teaching license. 🔔 Subscribe for daily bodycam footage, arrests, and law enforcement transparency content.
