SYLVANIA, OH - On May 31st, 2023 at 1:26AM, an officer with the Sylvania Township Police Department observed a vehicle traveling 25 mph over the speed limit on a main street. The officer activated his emergency lights and pulled the driver over on an on-ramp to U.S. Route 23. The officer approached the suspect who then claimed that she was trying to go home and had not drank in the night. Later on, the suspect did admit to having one alcoholic beverage at a local bar when questioned again by the officer. After confirming her identity, the officer asked the suspect to step out of the vehicle to which she complied. The suspect immediately began crying upon exiting her car while claiming that she had only been pulled over once prior to this encounter. The officer then began administering a field sobriety test on the suspect. During the horizontal gaze nystagmus test, the officer observed a lack of smooth pursuit, the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees, and distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation in both eyes. For the walk-and-turn test, the suspect lost balance and broke from the starting position. During the test, the suspect stepped off the line, failed to touch heel-to-toe on multiple steps, and failed to keep her arms down by her side. The suspect had to be reminded to look at her raised foot during the one leg stand test. At the conclusion of the field sobriety test, the suspect was asked to provide a preliminary breath alcohol test to which she agreed. The suspect submitted a breath alcohol sample which yielded a result of .181g/210L. This is above twice the legal limit to drive in the State of Ohio if 21 years of age or older. Because the suspect was only 20 years old, this result was above nine times the State's legal limit of .02g/210L to drive if under the age of 21. Following the arrest, the suspect was transported to the Sylvania Township Police Department for further processing.
