This video shows the pursuit that resulted in the fatality of the suspect Darin Woodard. West Memphis Police dispatch was advised of people loitering in the parking lot of a hotel and a request to remove them was relayed. WMPD Officer Jarius Johnson (288) and Trooper Spencer Morris (D-23) responded to the location. After making contact with the caller, 288 and D-23 drove into the parking lot and began speaking to an individual when a Nissan Rogue tried to leave and refused to stop. A pursuit ensued with 288 taking primary and D-23 as secondary. Corporal Thomas Hubbard (D-29) also responded to assist. After catching up D-23 took over primary and performed a successful PIT on the suspect vehicle causing it to spin out and come to a stop. #288 attempted to give commands to the driver when he jumped out of the vehicle and hopped over the wall hitting the ground. He died upon impact. WEST MEMPHIS POLICE STATEMENT: Incident: 22-01383 Offense: General Information Report On 4/17/2022 at approximately 12:19 AM officers were dispatched to 210 West Service Road about a loitering complainant. An Arkansas State Trooper was in the area and responded to that call as well. While officers were investigating the complaint, the suspect who was occupying a maroon Nissan Rogue, attempted to leave the scene. While attempting to flee, the vehicle accelerated in the direction of the Trooper causing him to jump out of the way or be struck by the car. These actions initiated a vehicle pursuit with the West Memphis Police Department and Arkansas State Police. This pursuit reached speeds in excess of 100 mph on I-55. Arkansas State Police took over as primary in the pursuit and took the measures necessary to initiate a “PIT” maneuver that was successful. The maneuver caused the vehicle to strike the outside barrier before coming to a stop on I-55 just before crossing the bridge into Memphis Tennessee. The driver of the vehicle, identified as Darin Woodard, exited the vehicle through the rear passenger side of the vehicle and jumped over the barrier landing on the ground 40-50 feet below. Officers began life-saving measures on Woodard before EMS made the scene and transported Woods to Regional One where he succumbed to his injuries. The passenger, Ella Comfort, was detained by officers, and an investigation of the events was conducted by Arkansas State Police CID. It has been brought to the attention of the West Memphis Police Department that the passenger of the vehicle, Ella Comfort, has been on social media making outlandish allegations that this agency murdered Darin Woodard. An allegation that will not be ignored nor taken lightly. Anytime there is a loss of life it is always unfortunate but the grief you experience and how you chose to deal with it will not come at the expense of the integrity of the West Memphis Police Department. Ms. Comfort stated that we murdered Darin Woodard, threatened her and that she is seeking “justice”. The entire pursuit is on the dashcam of the pursuing officers, and you can see Mr. Woodard jump over the barrier wall after the vehicle came to a stop before officers could get to him. Due to these heinous allegations, the family sought answers and was shown the very same footage that will be released to the public accompanying this statement. At a time when the family should be grieving the loss of a family member, they were bombarded with lies as to what took place. The men and women of the department work tirelessly to protect this community and continue to make efforts to strengthen the trust of the citizens. This is an unfortunate example of what law enforcement deals with daily and it needs to stop. We will continue to make every effort to exude professionalism and transparency so that we can continue to be the police department this community can depend on.
