Police bodycam footage from San Diego shows a foot chase that turns into an officer-involved shooting when a fleeing parolee stops and turns on the officer. This police bodycam video from SDPD's Western Division was released as a critical incident video and covers the encampment contact, the foot pursuit, the failed Taser and the moment the officer fires. On June 30, 2026 at about 9:50 AM, San Diego Police officers on a Neighborhood Policing Division abatement detail contacted 44-year-old Judah Starr McBrearity at an encampment in the open area near the 4700 block of Pacific Highway. He gave a false name, told officers "don't touch my stuff," walked away and then ran. Dispatch confirmed an active no-bail parole warrant and a history of resisting officers (148 / 69 PC). Officers lost sight of him along Friars Road and under the I-5 underpass. Officer Penuelas relocated him under the Pacific Highway overpass and chased him on foot. A Taser was deployed and had no effect. As McBrearity turned toward the officer and pointed what appeared to be a gun, Officer Penuelas fired his service weapon. McBrearity was not struck and kept running into the San Diego River bed. A search with SWAT, air support and a drone followed. He was located under a bridge in the riverbed about 2 PM, a K9 unit was deployed, and he was taken into custody just before 7 PM. He was booked into San Diego Central Jail on a felony parole violation and one count of 69 PC (obstructing/resisting an executive officer). As of the video release, no firearm had been recovered. The San Diego County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit is investigating; the District Attorney's Office will review the officer's use of force. The FBI and U.S. Attorney's Office are monitoring, and SDPD Internal Affairs and the Commission on Police Practices will also review the incident.
