In this episode of Mikey Pipes, Cuffed by Cops, newly released bodycam and patrol car footage captures a high-risk pursuit that begins as a routine traffic stop—and quickly spirals into a felony investigation. In the early morning hours of December 22nd, 2024, DeLand Police Department officers attempted to stop a gray Kia after observing multiple traffic violations. Instead of pulling over, the driver accelerated away, fleeing through city streets while running stop signs, crossing into oncoming lanes, and endangering the public. According to arrest records and witness statements, the vehicle was later observed driving recklessly on Interstate 4, nearly forcing other motorists off the roadway before crashing into a tree. The driver was identified as Johnny Eugene Smiley, the sole occupant of the vehicle. During the investigation, officers also learned the Kia had reportedly been taken without the owner’s permission, adding a grand theft motor vehicle charge to the case. This video includes exclusive multi-angle law-enforcement footage, from the initial pursuit to the crash scene, hospital transport, and eventual booking at the Volusia County Branch Jail. Charges Include: • Fleeing & Eluding Law Enforcement • Grand Theft Motor Vehicle • Additional felony charges related to reckless driving Smiley was treated at a hospital, declined to provide a statement, and was later booked into jail. As always, all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Was this pursuit justified — or should officers have disengaged sooner? Drop your thoughts in the comments.
