On September 29, 2022, officers initiated a traffic stop after observing a vehicle commit a traffic violation near a railroad crossing. As the vehicle came to a stop, the passenger suddenly fled on foot, clutching a clear bag while ignoring repeated commands to stop. Officers pursued the suspect, who tossed the bag underneath a parked truck before surrendering. Witnesses confirmed the suspect had discarded the bag, which was later recovered and found to contain a large quantity of suspected narcotics. A search incident to arrest uncovered additional drugs and paraphernalia. Investigators soon learned the passenger had an active felony warrant and admitted he fled because he knew he was wanted. The investigation expanded when officers discovered evidence suggesting the driver had just completed a narcotics transaction moments before the stop. Surveillance observations, witness statements, and later cellphone data indicated an exchange of cash for drugs in a nearby parking lot. A K9 alerted to the presence of narcotics inside the vehicle, and electronic devices were seized as evidence. In total, approximately 29 grams of methamphetamine and over 2 grams of fentanyl were recovered. Both individuals were arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including drug trafficking, possession of narcotics, tampering with evidence, and drug paraphernalia violations.
