The Surinam toad is one of the strangest mothers in nature. She doesn’t build a nest, guard eggs, or raise her young like most animals. Instead, her own back becomes the nursery. In this video, we zoom in layer by layer through the body of a female Surinam toad — from her flat, leaf-like camouflage, to the skin on her back, to the sealed pockets where her babies develop. Inside those pockets, the young skip the normal tadpole stage and grow into fully formed mini-toads before breaking out through her skin. It is weird, creepy, and honestly one of the most unbelievable survival strategies in the animal world. Watch until the end to see how the mother’s back returns to normal after the babies hatch.
