A woman had swiped a vape. He pulled up and talked to a store clerk. The clerk nodded toward a woman in the driver's seat of a red 2023 Ford Escape. The car was backing out and almost hit another vehicle. Cornielson told her to step out. They identified her as Karen Carbonara. As he spoke with her, alcohol stench hit him hard. He spotted clear signs of being drunk. The clerk said no charges if she paid up. Cornielson walked her inside. She bought the vape. She wobbled in and out. A quick car search found an open wine bottle on the front passenger floor. Karen owned up to drinking wine that day. Suspecting she was impaired, he asked for sobriety tests. First came the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus check. He saw no smooth eye tracking. Nystagmus jerked hard at max turn. It started before 45 degrees. No up-and-down shakes, though. Next, the Walk and Turn. Karen botched the instructions. Tests ended there. Shoplift call, booze smell, open bottle, failed tests—enough for DUI arrest. Officer Surine helped cuff her. She slipped them at first. Cornielson read the Georgia Implied Consent warning right there. She refused a breath test. He loaded her into the patrol car. Off to Clarke County Jail. She got booked.
