What a terrifying moment captured on police body camera, an Ohio police officer narrowly escaped death after a suspected shoplifter attempted to shoot him at point-blank range. This complete bodycam breakdown analyzes the chilling encounter involving 21-year-old Shane Newman at a Canton, Ohio Walmart, where a routine theft investigation nearly turned into a fatal tragedy. The incident occurred in December 2025 while the officer was questioning Newman in the store's loss prevention room. After providing a false identity, Newman suddenly pulled a handgun from his waistband and aimed it directly at the officer's head. In what many are calling a miracle, the gun jammed as Newman pulled the trigger. This mechanical failure gave the officer and a heroic Walmart loss prevention worker the split-second needed to struggle for the weapon and take the armed suspect into custody. ⚖️ Legal Charges & Investigation Following the incident, Shane Newman was arrested and charged with several serious offenses, including Attempted Murder, Felonious Assault on a Peace Officer, and Having Weapons Under Disability. Prosecutors emphasized the cold-blooded nature of the attempt, noting that the only reason the officer survived was a malfunction of the firearm. The Canton Police Department released this bodycam footage to highlight the extreme, unpredictable dangers law enforcement officers face during seemingly minor calls. 📢 Stay Informed We provide in-depth analysis of high-stakes police encounters, tactical bodycam breakdowns, and legal updates from across the country.
