In August 2022, 19-year-old Tayvin Galanakis was pulled over and arrested by Newton, Iowa police for suspected DUI—despite blowing 0.00 on a breathalyzer and showing no signs of impairment. Now, bodycam footage and court rulings are raising serious questions about the officers’ actions. Galanakis has filed a federal lawsuit against the officers and the City of Newton, alleging false arrest and civil rights violations. In 2025, the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the officers are not entitled to qualified immunity, allowing the case to proceed to trial.
