Around 8:55 last night, deputies responded to a report of a possible drowning in the marina at 2700 N. Peninsula Ave., New Smyrna Beach. A caller reported hearing a splash and a man yelling for help, but the area was behind a locked gate. Sgt. Leven was first on scene to discover a man had fallen out of his wheelchair into the marina and was clinging to a pipe to keep his head above water. Sgt. Leven jumped in with a buoy to help float the man to safety. The 72-year-old was evaluated by New Smyrna Beach FD and declined further medical attention.
