Deputies were called to 9201 Pine Island Road at about 11:20 a.m. for a well being check on Donald C. Brady, 68. It immediately turned into a terrifying encounter. “Gun!” a deputy shouted as they walked up to a screened in porch on the back of the house. Two deputies can be seen running for cover as the gunman opens fire. “Put the gun down!” a deputy shouted repeatedly, sometimes using profanity. “Put the gun down,” the deputy shouted, using his name. “We’re the Sheriff’s Office. We’re just checking on you!” At one point, the man’s voice can be heard on the video telling the deputies to get off his property. “I don’t want to shoot that old man,” a deputy said. “I don’t either," the other deputy said. Their attention soon turned to concerns about the unidentified woman in the house. “Where are you at?” they shouted to her. She said she was on the porch. “Where’s he at?” “I don’t know.” They tried to figure out a way to remove her from danger, wondered if there was another way into the house, and worried about her getting into a crossfire. Soon, members of the sheriff’s SWAT team arrived. The sheriff’s crisis negotiation team tried to talk to the man, according to a sheriff’s press release at the time. Dramatic video shows a SWAT team member firing four shots at the man with a rifle, then two more, then two more individual shots can be heard. “He’s still moving,” a SWAT team member said. Another deputy can be heard over the radio asking if he was in the way. Soon, a supervisor can be heard telling the SWAT team member to stop talking. “No officers are injured. He’s down. We’re going to move in for medical stuff.”
