Robert Durst was heir to one of New York's most powerful real estate empires. He watched his mother fall from a rooftop when he was seven. He married Kathie McCormack in 1973. In January 1982, Kathie vanished from the couple's cottage in South Salem, New York. She was 29 years old. Durst told police she took the train back to the city. Her body has never been found. His closest friend, Susan Berman — daughter of a Las Vegas mobster who had provided him with a false alibi — was found shot execution-style in the back of the head at her Beverly Hills home in December 2000. An anonymous letter sent to police misspelled the address "Beverley Hills." New York police had been about to interview Berman about Kathie's disappearance. She was silenced before they could. In 2001, Durst was hiding as a mute woman in a $300-a-month Galveston, Texas rooming house. His elderly neighbour Morris Black discovered his identity. Black was shot and killed. Durst dismembered the body, placed the parts in garbage bags, and threw them into Galveston Bay. He admitted to the dismemberment. A Texas jury acquitted him of murder. Then in 2012 — Durst agreed to participate in an HBO documentary called The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst. His lead prosecutor later said: "Bob's problem is that he loves the attention. It was like a drug to him." During production, Susan Berman's stepson gave filmmakers a handwritten letter Durst had written to Berman. The block printing matched the anonymous cadaver letter — including the same misspelling of "Beverley." When filmmakers showed Durst both letters side by side in his final interview, he had no answer. He left the interview. He walked to the bathroom. His microphone was still recording. He said to himself: "There it is. You're caught. What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course." Filmmakers said they didn't discover the audio until years after it was recorded. The night before the final episode was scheduled to air — March 14, 2015 — police arrested Durst in his New Orleans hotel room. He was found with a .38 revolver, a latex mask, a fake ID, marijuana, and over $40,000 in cash. He was running. Again. In September 2021, a Los Angeles jury convicted Robert Durst of first-degree murder for the execution-style killing of Susan Berman. He was sentenced to life without parole. In October 2021 he was charged with Kathie's murder in New York. He died on January 10, 2022, aged 78, in the prison hospital at San Quentin. Kathie Durst's murder case was effectively ended by his death. Her body has never been found. Money does not determine justice. People do. If you know something — speaking up changes everything.
