A routine traffic stop quickly escalates as an officer investigates an impaired driver, revealing a complex situation of distress and significant intoxication. On April 22, 2022, a staff member at a local school reported concerns about a potentially impaired teacher who had just left the premises. An officer working an extra detail quickly located a silver 2015 Hyundai driving erratically towards a landscaping trailer. Upon initiating a traffic stop, the driver informed the officer she was having a panic attack, but clear indicators of impairment were observed. Due to the nature of the assignment, backup officers were called to take over the DUI investigation, arriving shortly thereafter. The driver initially refused to exit her vehicle for field sobriety exercises, stating she was distraught after being instructed to leave the school. However, she eventually complied. Officers then administered several standardized field sobriety tests, during which the driver exhibited significant difficulties. She failed to maintain heel-to-toe contact and took an incorrect number of steps during the Walk and Turn test, and struggled to raise her foot properly during the One Leg Stand test, putting it down prematurely. Based on her erratic driving behavior and inability to adequately perform the exercises, the driver was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. During a search of her vehicle incident to arrest, six bottles of vodka were discovered. Although she initially declined, the driver later agreed to provide breath samples at the police department. Her subsequent breathalyzer results indicated alarming blood alcohol content levels of 0.311% and 0.305%, nearly four times the legal limit of 0.08%. She was formally cited for DUI and transferred to the Pinellas County Jail for booking. --- Transparency through the lens of the law.
