The stabbing occurred just before 4 p.m. during a fight at a pharmacy on Reservoir Drive near Alvarado Hospital Medical Center, according to San Diego police Lt. Adam Sharki. “Officers forced entry into the pharmacy and found a female suffering from multiple stab wounds to her upper body,” Sharki said in a news release Tuesday. He added: “It is still early in the investigation and little is known about the circumstances leading up to the female’s death, other than it appears the suspect and victim were either co-owners or employees of the business where this incident occurred and for unknown reasons, the suspect attacked the victim.” The victim of the stabbing, described as 66-year-old woman, was taken to a hospital while paramedics performed CPR on her, San Diego police Officer Scott Lockwood said. The woman later died, police said. While following up on the stabbing, two officers fatally shot the 77-year-old suspect on La Cresta Boulevard, north of the intersection with La Cresta and Mountain View roads in an unincorporated community east of Granite Hills, authorities said. According to scanner traffic, police had been able to identify the stabbing suspect and his address. They also got a description of his vehicle. Sheriff’s deputies and police officers went to the address and surrounded the property. They eventually spotted a man who matched the description of the suspect walking on the property and loading items in a vehicle, according to the scanner traffic. At some point the man stood near the driver’s side of the vehicle. Soon afterward, a sheriff’s helicopter crew overhead indicated officers had fired less-lethal rounds of some kind and that the man was possibly armed with a gun. Officers then fired their firearms. Sheriff’s Lt. Chris Steffen said the suspect had failed to comply with officers’ commands, prompting them to fire bean bag rounds, which “had no effect” on the suspect. When the suspect reached for a shotgun from inside the vehicle, two San Diego police officers fired their guns, Steffen said. The suspect died before he could be taken to a hospital. In accordance with a countywide protocol, the county Sheriff’s Department was called in to investigate the police shooting. It marked the first shooting this year by law enforcement officers in the county. San Diego police homicide detectives were investigating the fatal stabbing. The names of the stabbing victim and the suspect were not released.
