On July 10, 2026, at approximately 2:22 a.m., California Highway Patrol officers responded to a two-vehicle crash on northbound Interstate 5, north of SeaWorld Drive in San Diego. According to CHP reports, a Honda Civic struck the rear of a BMW while changing lanes. The Honda sustained extensive front-end damage and was left partially blocking two traffic lanes. The BMW driver complained of pain to his head and the back of his neck and was transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital. CHP Officers reported detecting a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. The Honda driver allegedly displayed slurred speech and red, watery eyes. She told the officer she had consumed one Truly and rated the effects of the alcohol as two out of ten. The report states that she provided conflicting accounts of when she stopped drinking. Two preliminary alcohol-screening samples reportedly produced results of .217% and .207%. A .217% BAC is 2.71 times California’s 0.08% legal limit. The driver was unable to complete chemical breath testing at the CHP office. After being transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital, she agreed to provide a chemical blood sample. The blood-test result was still listed as pending in the records provided. The driver was arrested and booked into the Las Colina Jail on suspicion of felony DUI causing injury. CHP recommended the following charges for review by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office: • California Vehicle Code 23153(a) — Driving under the influence of alcohol and causing injury • California Vehicle Code 23153(b) — Driving with a BAC of 0.08% or greater and causing injury California Highway Patrol Officers involved: Officer G. Casillas ID - 24766 Officer F. Rodriguez ID - 24812 Officer L. Ramirez ID - 24843 All individuals are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
