-Manchester, UK. -July 26, 2022. Gasping rapidly and clearly in shock, Sergeant Tim Ansell staggers to his feet and matter-of-factly tells a colleague: "Put something on my neck here, I've been f***ing stabbed here." What had been a routine road accident had turned into every copper's worst nightmare - the only saving grace that an ambulance was already at the scene. The uniformed officer wasn't even looking at his assailant. He was standing in the road, his back turned, when he was inexplicably jumped by a hooded passer-by who had nothing do do with the crash and who lunged at the officer and stabbed him in the neck. The attack sent the shocked officer backwards over a prone motorcycle which had been involved in the crash. Other cops tackle knife maniac, eventually bringing him to the ground after firing a Taser stun gun at him. One of those colleagues hears Sgt Ansell in distress and immediately comes to his aid. The colleague and tries to reassure him: "You're fine. Stay there. Stay there. Stay there." But he's not fine. Sgt Ansell's body-cam footage captures his rapid breathing and his blood-spatted hands as he's led into the back of the ambulance. Shocking as it is, getting hurt on the job is a risk frontline cops face every day. This encounter was one of 75 across Greater Manchester this year where cops have been hurt. Today GMP released footage of the horrific incident to illustrate the danger frontline cops face ever day. In April, his attacker Jacob Brown, 27, of Wood Road, Whalley Range, was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order until he is deemed safe and stable for release, for one count of attempted murder and three counts of wounding with intent. And last night Sgt Ansell and two those colleagues won gongs the National Bravery Awards. Neighbourhood sergeants Ansell and Marc Foster, along with PC Marcus Wolstencroft, have been praised for their efforts when they attended the incident on Wood Road, on the border of Stretford and Whalley Range on July 26 last year. The trio had attempted to bring the driver of a moped to a stop before the bike was later involved in a collision with a car. It was then Ansell's assailant Brown, wearing a hoodie tied tightly to cover his face, suddenly launched his attack. Brown had been carrying a blue handled craft knife when the crash between a moped and a Seat car took place around 100 yards from his home. He then 'took them by surprise' and launched the 'ferocious' attack on the officers, his sentencing hearing was told. After pleading guilty, and while on remand at HMP Liverpool in August last year, Brown, who has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, attacked on a prison advisor by stabbing him with a pen repeatedly. And, in September, while on video link from prison, he used a modified piece of prison cutlery to stab a prison guard in front of a shocked courtroom. All three police officers involved in the July 26 attack were previously presented with bravery awards at the Chief Constable’s Annual Awards in October 2023. And, in April, they were also given the John Egerton Bravery Award by GMP’s Police Federation. Mike Peake, chair of the Greater Manchester branch of the Police Federation, which hosted last night's awards in London, said: “Sergeant Marc Foster, Sergeant Tim Ansell, and PC Marcus Wolstencroft, when carrying out their duties, should never expect to be so viciously attacked. This is sadly yet another example of the current dangers police officers encounter daily.
