On Sunday, March 27, 2022, officers with the O'Fallon Police Department responded to a report of unattended children at a Walmart in O'Fallon, Illinois. Bystanders had intervened after observing a young boy exit a parked vehicle and walk toward active traffic. The mother, Destiney A. Lewis, eventually returned to the vehicle and made several highly distressed and suicidal statements to the responding officers. When officers attempted to detain her, Lewis physically resisted by pulling away, dropping to her knees, and refusing to walk. She was ultimately taken into custody and issued citations for Endangering the Life of a Child and Resisting a Peace Officer. The children were safely released to their grandmother.
