On January 13, 2024, Officer James Hans of the Seaside Heights, NJ Police Department observed a vehicle fail to stop at a stop sign and neglect to signal a turn. Officer Hans initiated an investigation by stopping the vehicle and made contact with the female driver. She provided the requested documents and admitted that she was heading home from a bar after a birthday party. Shortly thereafter, backup Officer Jimenez Zilenas arrived to assist with the motor vehicle stop. According to police reports, Officer Hans suspected that the driver may have been impaired. When he requested that she step out of the vehicle for field sobriety testing, the driver refused. The situation escalated when the driver began reaching around in her vehicle for unknown objects. Officer Hans ordered her to exit the vehicle, but she continued to refuse. As the officers attempted to extricate her, the driver struck Officer Hans in the face with an open hand. She was quickly detained and secured in a police car for transport to the station. Upon arrival at the police station, the driver refused to submit to breath testing. It was later revealed that this incident marks the driver’s second DUI arrest. She was subsequently released to a friend after being charged with several motor vehicle violations and criminal charges for assaulting a police officer.
