Description

In South Florida, officers observed several fishermen along a busy road exiting the water with a cooler and a small jon boat. A resource inspection revealed a total of 11 undersized snook that were harvested with a net. A large black canvas bag was discovered containing a monofilament gill net approximately 150 feet in length. The owner of the net was arrested for felony use of a gill net in state waters. In 1994, voters approved a constitutional amendment that banned gill nets in Florida waters. Today, it’s a third-degree felony to use a gill net to harvest fish and carries a $ 5,000 fine plus up to 5 years in jail. A gill net uses floats to suspend the net vertically. As a fish swims into the net, its head and gills pass through the net, but its body doesn’t. As it tries to back out, they become trapped. Between the use of the gill net, catching 11 undersized snook, the pompano, and going over the limit on snails, the man could face seventy-five thousand dollars in fines and jail time.
