Nutley police officers were dispatched to a local auto parts store after management spotted a man matching the description of a shoplifter from the previous day. Upon making contact with the individual, officers discovered the suspect actively concealing unpurchased store merchandise inside his personal bag. When officers attempted to place him under arrest, the individual became uncooperative, tensing his arms and pulling away to prevent handcuffs from being applied. Officers utilized compliance holds to secure the individual. A subsequent search revealed additional stolen items hidden in his waistband totaling over $180, along with a glass pipe containing burnt residue. Following the arrest, the suspect repeatedly requested medical attention, leading to a prolonged and physically combative encounter with responding EMS personnel. After multiple transports to a nearby medical center for evaluation, the suspect was issued a summons for shoplifting, resisting arrest, and possession of drug paraphernalia. These charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. An arrest is not a finding of guilt: that’s something for a court to decide.
