🎥 In today's copyrighted documentary, we report on the night a traffic stop in Albuquerque turned into a crash, a multi-deputy foot chase, and the seizure of more than 26,000 fentanyl pills — all under Operation Route 66. That evening — April 10, 2025 — a Bernalillo County Sheriff's deputy was on patrol in northeast Albuquerque as part of Operation Route 66, a joint county task force going after drug trafficking. According to the police report, he spotted a gray sedan speeding and blowing through a red light. The deputy tried to pull the car over after it turned into a CVS parking lot at San Mateo and Montgomery. Instead, the driver rammed the deputy's cruiser, drove up onto the sidewalk near the store entrance, and both occupants bailed out and took off on foot. Backup deputies poured in. The chase spilled into a nearby apartment complex. According to BCSO, 21-year-old Luis Flores was found on the second floor and taken into custody, with a 16-year-old passenger — reportedly Flores's younger brother per court records — caught shortly after. Deputies recovered a backpack the suspects had ditched during the chase. Inside: more than 26,000 fentanyl pills, around $26,000 in cash, and a digital scale. It's clear the deputies saved many lives by getting those 26,000 fentanyl pills off the streets. The police report says both suspects had traveled to Albuquerque from Phoenix, Arizona. As you saw in our most recent documentary where an Arizona sheriff's deputy seized 370,000 fentanyl pills, the route from the border to Phoenix to Albuquerque is a very well-known drug corridor. Flores was charged with trafficking a synthetic narcotic, aggravated fleeing from police, child abuse negligently, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and a string of related counts. Court records show he took a plea deal and was sentenced by Judge Emetario Rudolfo to five years in the New Mexico Department of Corrections. The juvenile was turned over to juvenile detention. Operation Route 66 — the operation behind this arrest — is led by BCSO in partnership with the New Mexico State Police, the Bernalillo County DA's Office, and the New Mexico Corrections Department's Probation and Parole Division. It targets drug trafficking in Albuquerque's International District -- aka Albuquerque's "War Zone." BCSO says the operation has resulted in hundreds of arrests so far.
