🚨 Stolen Volkswagen Pursuit — Liberty, Missouri (Feb. 28, 2025) Clay County deputies were alerted to a stolen black Volkswagen captured on FLOCK cameras traveling south on US‑69. A deputy located the vehicle merging onto I‑35 and followed it until additional units were in position. When emergency lights were activated, the driver — Johnny J. Peguero‑Taveras — accelerated and refused to stop. Deputies reported speeds up to 85–90 mph, with Peguero‑Taveras running a red light at MO‑291 and briefly driving into oncoming lanes. The pursuit continued onto N. Church Road, where speeds reached 90 mph in a 35 mph zone. The vehicle then entered an industrial area, struck a curb, and went off‑road between Church Road and the WoodSpring Suites. With the vehicle still in drive, Peguero‑Taveras fled on foot wearing a pink shirt. The two passengers remained in the vehicle and complied with commands. The Volkswagen caught fire shortly afterward and was extinguished by KCFD. A perimeter was established, and workers nearby reported seeing a man running into the woods. Deputies located Peguero‑Taveras after he discarded his shirt and attempted to circle back toward N. Church Road. He was taken into custody without further incident. Detectives later learned the vehicle had been stolen during a residential burglary, with video showing Peguero‑Taveras taking the keys. Both passengers told investigators they begged him to stop during the pursuit and feared they would crash.
