A quiet afternoon in a Houston neighborhood took an unexpected turn when a loose dog ran into the street and a confrontation quickly escalated. On May 29, 2021, Houston police responded to an incident at the 700 block of Dunham Road after a young child was injured during an encounter involving a loose dog. According to investigators, Angelia Mia Vargas was with her 5-year-old son and another family member when a dog named Bruno ran out of a nearby home and into the street. The events that followed unfolded within only a few seconds. Video from the neighborhood shows Bruno leaving the property and moving into the roadway while his owner attempted to call him back. Vargas then fired a small-caliber firearm three times toward the dog across the street, according to the Houston Police Department. One of the rounds ricocheted and struck her young son. The child was transported to a local hospital in stable condition with injuries that police said were not life-threatening. Bruno, the dog involved in the incident, survived as well. Investigators determined that the firearm had been discharged across a public roadway and in the direction of two occupied houses. Following an investigation and consultation with the Harris County District Attorney's Office, Vargas was arrested and charged with deadly conduct — discharge of a firearm. The dog's owner was also cited for allowing the dog to run loose. In this video, we'll walk through the available footage and explain what happened before the police response, how the situation unfolded, and what followed afterward. The incident serves as a reminder of how quickly an ordinary neighborhood situation can escalate when decisions are made in a matter of seconds.
