On the morning of October 11, 2025, Belleville police officers were dispatched to an intersection following a report of a stationary vehicle that had not moved for an extended period. Upon arriving at approximately 736 AM, officers located a white Toyota RAV4 wagon occupied by a female driver and a female passenger. When instructed to lower her window, the driver immediately exhibited signs of severe impairment. She swayed in her seat, slurred her words, avoided eye contact, and accidentally activated her windshield wipers while struggling to operate the window controls. After declining medical attention, the driver was asked to step out of the vehicle. When questioned if she had fallen asleep behind the wheel, she denied it and insisted she was simply driving, despite the strong odor of alcohol emanating from her breath and her noticeable difficulty answering basic questions. While a responding sergeant conducted standardized field sobriety tests on the driver, officers assessed the passenger, who was found to be extremely intoxicated. Because the passenger was completely unable to identify herself or arrange a safe ride home, emergency medical personnel were dispatched to transport her to Clara Maass Hospital for medical observation. The driver was formally arrested for suspicion of driving while intoxicated at 751 AM. Her vehicle was subsequently impounded and towed pursuant to John's Law. After being transported to a neighboring police department for off-site testing, the driver was brought back to Belleville headquarters and placed in a holding cell for processing. The incident finally concluded when she was released into the custody of her brother at 1140 AM. These charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. An arrest is not a finding of guilt: that’s something for a court to decide.
