Incident: On July 31, 2026, at approximately 1:50 a.m., a Redford Township Police officer observed an unmarked police vehicle parked on the grass at a White Castle with its blue emergency lights activated. Officers made contact with the occupant, who was identified as Detroit Police officer Jalen Nelson. After speaking with Nelson, officers began an OWI investigation. Following an extended interaction and multiple attempts to continue the investigation, Nelson was placed under arrest for OWI and transported to the Redford Township Police Department for booking. Officers searched the department vehicle which was subsequently towed from the scene. During booking, Nelson consented to a Chemical Breath Test. The test showed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.24%, three times Michigan’s legal limit of 0.08%. Nelson was charged with OWI High BAC and was granted a $3,500, 10% bond. He was later released after posting $350. His next court date is scheduled for October 2026. The Detroit Police Department released a statement advising that Nelson was placed on administrative leave while the department reviews the incident.
