A man was hired at Dollar General in Washington, Illinois on December 30th, 2025. It was his first day. That same day, he waited for his manager to go on break, and handed a fellow employee a $50 bill and asked her to add money to his Cash App account. The manager later suspected it was counterfeit. The next morning, the store manager took the bill to Washington Community Bank. It was confirmed fake. Surveillance video showed the employee had also passed counterfeit $50s at two other Dollar General locations and a bar in Peoria County — over a span of several weeks. His explanation: he'd received the bills from a man named Joe as payment for working on a car, and had been using them "to survive." On December 31st, officers responded to the store. They found the employee stocking shelves. He was placed in handcuffs before his second shift ended. Detectives from two additional counties responded to the scene. After officers left, a store manager found torn counterfeit $50 bills hidden under a desk, in an area not covered by security cameras. He was charged with felony Forgery and transported to Woodford County Jail.
