On April 3rd, 2024, Corey Nathaniel Bresland — a senior installation technician for SentriGuard Home Security in Aurora, Colorado — was arrested and charged with burglary in the first degree, theft, computer crime, and criminal impersonation of business records after investigators connected him to 11 burglaries committed without a single triggered alarm or sign of forced entry. Investigators found Bresland had secretly programmed a fixed, memorized override code into each system during legitimate installations rather than the randomized code company policy required, then waited 8 to 14 months before returning to disarm the system and steal jewelry, firearms, and electronics worth an estimated $340,000. A forensic audit found 19 additional properties carrying the same tampered code, still vulnerable, with no burglary yet committed. The scheme was uncovered after three victims in the same area turned out to share the same installer, and manufacturer-side access logs, which Bresland had no ability to falsify, confirmed his override code had disarmed each system at the exact moment of each theft. Bresland was sentenced to 16 years in state prison and permanently barred from any occupational license involving home entry or security installation in Colorado.
