On the evening of September 24, 2025, St. Petersburg Police were called to a head-on crash in the 7800 block of 38th Avenue North. According to police, a Subaru Outback travelling westbound crossed into oncoming traffic and struck an eastbound sedan. The driver of the sedan was seriously injured. His passenger, 89-year-old Angel Shihate, was critically hurt and later died at the hospital. This video is the St. Petersburg Police body-worn camera from that evening: the officer who found the Subaru's driver still sitting in the wreck, the four witnesses who watched the car drift across the yellow line, and the neighbour who stopped and held pressure on the injured driver's arm until paramedics arrived. Police identified the driver as Brett McClelland and said he was under the influence. He was treated for his injuries and taken into custody. Investigators initially charged him with DUI manslaughter and DUI causing serious bodily injury; in October 2025 those charges were upgraded to include vehicular homicide, reckless driving causing serious bodily injury, and felony DUI, third offence. WHAT THE FOOTAGE DOES NOT SHOW - and what the record says: According to the Tampa Bay Times, this was not the first time. In January 2017, Pinellas Park police stopped him for swerving on the road and arrested him for DUI. He pleaded guilty, was placed on probation, and had his licence revoked for a year. In January 2024 - twenty months before this crash - Clearwater police stopped him for drifting across lanes and nearly hitting another car. The arrest report noted multiple signs of impairment and he told officers he had smoked marijuana earlier that night. That DUI charge was reduced to reckless driving. He pleaded guilty and was given one year of probation. Pinellas County jail records list six counts under court case 25-08934-CF: DUI manslaughter, DUI causing serious bodily injury, felony DUI, vehicular homicide, reckless driving with serious bodily injury, and possession of fentanyl. A possession charge filed in the same case is not evidence of what he had taken before driving, and it has not been tested in court. Jail records show he was booked back into the Pinellas County Jail on January 5, 2026 on a contempt warrant. As of August 2026 he remains in custody with no bond assessed on any count, and every charge is listed as awaiting trial. Brett McClelland has not been tried. A criminal charge is only an accusation, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. Bodycam via the St. Petersburg Police Department, released as public record.
