On June 4, 2023, in Crescent City, a California Highway Patrolman was parked in the Old Del Norte Pawn Shop parking lot monitoring traffic when he was passed by a Nissan Xterra going 54 mph in a 30 mph zone on Highway 101 north. The officer immediately conducted a traffic stop and the driver stopped in the Verizon Wireless parking lot. After further investigation, the officer conducted field sobriety tests on the driver, Robert Ray, before placing him into custody for driving under the influence of alcohol.
