The Blount County Sheriff’s Office released video of a shooting that left two deputies injured earlier this month at a home in the Rockford area. On June 11, two deputies responded to a domestic incident in the 1100 block of Jacob Springs Boulevard. The incident ended with two deputies being shot and the suspect, Ronald Reed Millsaps, being taken into custody. At the time, the sheriff’s office said the deputies’ injuries were not thought to be life-threatening, and they were later released from the hospital. Video footage shows officers on a dash camera approaching the home as a dispatcher tells deputies who are near the home “that male just called back in” and “stated that if you guys enter the household, you’re going out in a blaze of glory.” video then shows Deputy Edward Walker returning to his car and moving it into a driveway across the street from the home, before getting into a safer position by his cruiser. Both deputies have their service firearms drawn when the home’s garage door opens. At that point, Deputy Corbin Smith’s bodycam shows he is by the garage and both deputies order the person inside the garage to show them their hands. When the individual inside disappears, the body camera then shows Smith running back to be beside Deputy Walker’s cruiser. a series of gunshots are heard, but the person firing the shots cannot be seen. The deputies returned fire and radio to dispatch that there have been shots fired. The suspect still continues to fire at the deputies, and the audio captures the sound of bullets flying by. After about a minute, the gunshots stop momentarily. When they begin again, Walker is struck, and almost immediately, he and Smith work to apply a tourniquet as shots continue. Eventually, Walker hands his firearm to Smith and instructs him to cover them. The dashcam video captures the moment when bullets break the windshield of the cruiser, and dust being stirred up in the front yard of the home by gunshots. Once Walker finishes a tourniquet to his own leg, Smith is also struck in the leg. The two deputies then reverse roles with Smith handing Walker his firearm back to cover them as Smith applies a tourniquet. Over the radio, a voice can be heard saying that SWAT is headed to the scene, and then gunshots continue. other deputies arrive at the scene and can be seen on Walker’s bodycam at a house to the side. As Smith and Walker wait to be extracted from the scene, numerous sirens can be heard as well as Walker instructing Smith to “stay with [him]” and for Smith to “get [his] head down.” At this point in the video, there is a pause in the gunshots for a few minutes, and Walker says he can hear “him” reloading. At around 15 minutes into the video, shots begin again. Walker and Smith are extracted, running to the side of the house behind them, climbing over a fence, and walking to the road where they are assisted by other deputies. Throughout both Smith and Walker’s body camera videos, the person firing from the home cannot be seen. The body camera of a third deputy shows as he comes to cover for Smith and Walker as they are extracted. Then, a fourth body camera belonging to Lieutenant D. Moore shows deputies directing fire as Smith and Walker are extracted, as well as when Millsaps is taken out of the officers by SWAT team members and placed into the back of a BCSO cruiser. Following the shooting, Millsaps was arrested and charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault, attempted criminal homicide, especially aggravated kidnapping, and reckless endangerment. He was arraigned on Monday. According to the sheriff’s office, the TBI investigation is ongoing.
