Curry County, Brookings, Oregon On November 19, 2018, In Brookings Oregon Jennifer Gayman was returning home on her mobility scooter after a night out. Two Brookings Police Officers one of them on FTO Training pulled Jennifer over for riding her scooter on a sidewalk, a crosswalk and failure to wear a protective helmet. Jennifer, who had a doctor’s prescription for the scooter and relied on it as her primary mode of transportation, informed the officers of this fact. But they issued her a citation anyway. Instead of complying with the officers’ order to abandon her scooter and walk home (which was over a mile away), Jennifer decided to drive her scooter back home. The officers, determined to enforce the law, followed her in their vehicle at a staggering speed of 15 mph throughout the pursuit. The officers eventually caught up with Jennifer at her house and arrested her. She was charged with eluding a police officer, a felony offense in Oregon. Jennifer spent five days in jail over this incident. Jennifer Gayman appealed her conviction, and her case went to court. In a surprising turn of events, the Oregon Court of Appeals overturned her felony conviction. The city of Brookings had to pay a settlement to Jennifer in the amount of $300,000 for damages and as another part of the settlement the city had to issue a public apology and mandate ADA training for all Brookings law enforcement officers to ensure that disabled citizens using mobility scooters can move around Brookings without fear of being cited or arrested for exercising their basic rights. #policetransparency #viral #adayinmylife #medical
