Patrol officers in Champaign Illinois attempted to stop a twenty year old male riding a bicycle at night without the required front headlight. Instead of pulling over, the individual fled on a bike and eventually abandoned it in a store parking lot to escape on foot. Multiple officers pursued the suspect across heavy traffic intersections. During the foot chase, one officer deployed a Taser three times but the thick material of the winter coat worn by the suspect prevented the prongs from making an electrical connection. The fleeing individual ultimately surrendered and was arrested. Authorities discovered the individual had an active warrant for leaving the scene of an accident and was also in illegal possession of tobacco products. One officer sustained minor injuries after falling on the pavement during the foot pursuit. These charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. An arrest is not a finding of guilt: that’s something for a court to decide.
